2 Days Before Christmas & My DVD List

After I got home from the dentist, getting my hair cut, and going to the mall with all the other crazy people; I began working on several things. Actually the mall wasn’t all that bad at 2:00 pm, however, I wouldn’t want to be there at say 6:00 pm after everyone has gotten off of work. So are there any other last minute holiday shoppers out there? If so, you’re invited to reply in the comments section or on your blog.

The first, is a catalog system for my growing collection of DVDs. This will allow me to keep track of which DVDs I have and what I don’t. I’ve placed a link at the top of the page right next to the wish list link. Please note that I haven’t finished putting in the remaining DVDs in my collection, I would say I have a about 100 more to go.

The second, was to begin working on Wicked Webber. My goal is to have the vast majority of this site up and running by the first of the year, hopefully I’ll be able to meet it. So far I was able to get the front page and sub page layouts completed, now all I have to do is enter the remaining data into the database. Once the site launches, I will let everyone know.

Ultimate Wish List

Today added my “Ultimate Wish List” of some really expensive items I would have if I hit the lottery.

Also, I made a few minor improvements in the blog area. First off, when you view the details of a blog entry you will see that title reflected in the title bar. Secondly, when you search for a specific keyword it is also reflected in the title bar. Finally, I added several links just below the search area, the first is a link to my “Ultimate Wish List” and a soon to come link to an RSS Feed. One may ask what the RSS Feed wil do? Simply put, it will allow you to include my blog on your site. This will allow you to view my blog without actually visiting my site.

Good news everyone! The comments section finally works right. Thanks to some help I received from hector_sg over at the Macromedia Forums. I’ve also added a “permalink.” This is a permanent link for the person that would like to link to a specific blog entry. Also, coming soon is a link tell a friend about a specific blog entry.

Black Friday

Anyone see us on the local news this morning? Yes, I was one of those crazy fools lined up out in front of Best Buy this morning. We got there at 5:20 and the line was backed up half way through the parking lot. By 5:50 the line was all the way out of the parking lot and up the sidewalk of the main road. Despite the enormous line, I was impressed with the way Best Buy handled crowd control and the checkout process. It only took us 30 minutes to get the goods and then another hour to make through the line to checkout.

*Note* Database Paging: Incase you didn’t notice by the length of the blog page now, I’ve added database paging. Basically, this allows for a limited number of blog entries (10 to be exact) to be displayed followed by a set of remaining pages with the remainder of the blog entries. It sure cuts down on the length of the page doesn’t it?

Content Management System (CMS)

What a busy day. I’ve been working hard on my Content Management System (CMS). Basically this will enable me to add, edit, and remove items throughout my website. The whole system is being built from scratch. Once I have completed my site and I have some free time I will release the CMS to the public so that others can enjoy it too.

Search And Back Features

I’ve finally had a chance to fix the search feature. You can now search using one word, ie. ‘Halloween’. This will be adjusted last, but it serves its purpose right now. I’ve also added a JavaScript back button on the blogdetail.cfm page.

Today, I’ve been working a little bit on my content management system that I’m building from scratch. Once this is completed, I will be adding these features into my other sites.

The forth and final night of class was probably the best of all. Tonight I learned how to create and clear search history, send email from the web, and created my own functions and tags. If you haven’t taken this class then I would recommend doing so, it is definitely worth learning the foundation to ColdFusion.

The third night of class was awesome. Tonight I learned how to update, edit, and delete records from a database. We also learned how to make pages restricted to unregistered users. I can’t wait until tonight to see what we learn next.

The second night of class was just as great as the first one. Tonight I learned a lot more then I already knew. With that in mind, there will be some minor changes coming along shortly. Most of which are backend coding along with some formatting issues
