Comcast To Offer Phone Service In 2006

Comcast Corp. the nation’s largest cable television operator, said on Wednesday it will offer telephone service to more than 40 million households in 2006, in a significant challenge to local telephone companies.Comcast, which has 21 million cable television subscribers, will offer the service through a technology known as VOIP, or voice-over-Internet protocol, which allows telephone calls to be transmitted using a cable modem over high-speed data lines.Comcast said it would begin the rollout of telephone service in 2005 and expects to be able to offer the service to half of its subscribers by the end of next year.
